Club #34 Roster

David Poder – Still practices medicine at his age but his real passion is to direct Scrabble Club 34 and watch it grow into the largest club in North America

Jeff Polan – A NASPA director and the Co-Director of Club 34 since 2017. A local supporter who travels from the San Fernando Valley every week to Huntington Beach to help direct Club 34

Lorry Higgins – As Club photographer, all around “gofer” and fund raiser, Club 34 could not operate without Lorry!!

Paul Trachtenberg – Director emeritus.  Paul directed Club 34 from 2002 until 2014.  He is responsible for Club 34’s FREE status and the creation of the afternoon sessions!

 

Bruce D’Ambrosio – Bruce directs his own Club in Los Angeles but spends every Tuesday with us all day long!!


 

Marty Sturgeon – every Scrabble club needs its own CPA and we are so happy to have him.

 

Susan Rice – Susan is an avid bicyclist, traveler and Scrabbler.
Her personality lights up the room.

 

 

Bill Lapinsky – Bill spent many years in law enforcement but has caught a second wind in another career that he absolutely loves a lot more!
Maxine Marcus – Once I pried Maxine away from the Grand Jury, she has become an amazing addition to Club 34!!
Yuki Loritz – Strong expert, co-director of SuperScrabble and Collins supporter.


Desiree Engel – 103 years old, the oldest living Scrabble player that I know of. Desiree makes Club 34 a much happier place when she visits us which is quite regularly.
Joanie Scafuto – A special lady with a lot of heart and one of my favorite discoveries!!
Kim Peterson – You come by for breakfast one day and never leave. A regular attendee at Club 34.
Mark Bennett – His wife made him leave the house once his baseball career came to a halt and lo and behold he found Club 34!!
Najat Reikes – Najat started to develop her Scrabble skills on the banks of the Tigris. Comes to us every Tuesday from Riverside for the past 30 years.

Rick Duncan – Pastor from Monterrey, trained missionaries in Brazil, bom dia, tudo bem!?

 

James Cassidy – Hosts monthly BLANKHEAD sessions, once litigated in the US Supreme Court!

 

Amnon Meyers – A fierce competitor, helped with Club stats and website for a bunch of years.
Gary Moss – A director of his own Club, Gary comes to Club 34 when he can which is quite often!!
Gretchen Cowan – The matriarch of Scrabble everywhere!!

 

Karen Sturm – Another fierce competitor and one who hates to lose!
Lynn Gunn – A devoted long-time member of our club.

 

Barbara Creighton – A wonderful personality and a pleasure to be around!!

 

Paul Rickhoff – A recent addition to Club 34, Paul is another long distance traveler all the way from Santa Clarita!!
Evelyn Davis – Co-director of the monthly SUPERSCRABBLE gatherings.


 

Ken Louie – A wonderful player and known Scrabble commodity. He bleeds Dodger-blue!
Monica Gonzales – An up-and-coming newcomer.

Jane Crane – Longtime club member and faithful weekly supporter.

 

Donna Barr – Donna has been with the club many years.

 

Alan Stern – Awesome expert who directs Scrabble Club #44 in LA, works as Hollywood tour guide!

 

Anthea Palmos – Retired accountant moved from South Africa, fast-learner, helps with stats!
Debbie Bloom – Retired teacher. Loves mahjongg, dance, and now Scrabble.

 

 

Brian Reiss – Longtime club member and regular supporter of the club.

 

 

Mike Roche – He turned in his printing tiles for Scrabble tiles some time ago, and loves every minute of it.

 

David Prince – A realtor by trade and enjoys Club 34, showing up every week.

 

Marc Potter – Comes to Club 34 with a smile and great disposition.

 

Ellen Polsky – A great find of 2023 for club 34!

 

Beverly Moutet – A wonderful referral by Paul Rickhoff and a fast-improving scrabble player.

Ricky Hwa – Newcomer to the club, studying hard.

Melissa de la Fuente – A Desiree Engel discovery who loves Club 34!

 

Cynthia Helphrey – Cynthia has been a longtime member.



 

Richard Stein – The youngest and smartest member of Club 34 but unfortunately moved out of the area. A PhD from Stanford and very good Scrabble player.
Don Platt – Always pleasant, Don has had to taper his attendance lately.


 

Tom Brown – As good a person as you can find, and a sharp Scrabbler. Difficult for him to travel from Santa Monica.
Beth Byrne – What an enjoyment! Long time Scrabble clubber, lately living overseas.

 

Mir Aminy – A newcomer and fast-improving Scrabbler. Has had to prioritize his PhD program!

 

Inge Weinfeld – What a sweetheart!!  Inge unfortunately had to relocate with family to the East Coast.
Karin Borchard – A newcomer and strong competitor.


 

Amy Hanggie – Wonderful, intelligent long-timer, who can no longer attend regularly.

 

Dan Rodgers – A Desiree recruit, but not a regular attendee.

 

IN MEMORIAM

Tom Titus – Tom, renowned journalist and theatre critic, was an indispensible part of the club for more than 25 years.
Pat Reed – We fondly remember Pat as a sparkling personality and avid Scrabbler.

 

 

Maliha Mahmood – Maliha was a mega promoter of Superscrabble, hosting a monthly club at her home. Her unparalleled kindness and positivity have touched many lives.
Penny Baker – Penny lovingly directed the IHOP club for many years.



 

 

Sarah Jacobson – Graced us often with her presence, traveling all the way from Tucson, Arizona.
Esther Kisich – All kindness and warmth, and a smart Scrabbler.

 

Robert Peters – Bob was a poet and amazing director of our club.
